Revealing the Secrets of The Japanese Flags

We had the opportunity to work alongside Firing Line Museum of The Queen’s Dragoon Guards and The Royal Welsh in a translation project. Within the display at both Firing Line Museum and The Royal Welsh Museum were a collection of inscribed Japanese Flags. The inscriptions were a mystery until now, when their secrets were revealed.

The flags within The Royal Welsh collection were unfortunately lacking in context, having been documented as Japanese Flags that were recovered by the Regiments during the Second World War. This project was funded by The Federation of Museums and Galleries of Wales and The Firing Line Museum, and is a partnership project between the Firing Line Museum, Regimental Museum of The Royal Welsh (Brecon) and Cardiff University. This documentary, directed by William Osborne, explores the process of translation and its importance to better understand our collection and the stories we tell.
