Exhibition of The Longest Yarn: Britain at War
We are proud to announce that The Longest Yarn: Britain at War will be coming to Brecon this December, hosted by The Royal Welsh Museum with the support of 160th (Welsh) Brigade.
And this time, it will be bigger and better than ever.
For the first time in its Brecon visit, all 80 displays will be showcased side by side, creating an extraordinary journey through Britain during the Second World War.
A unique exhibition, stitch by stitch
Created by founder Tansy Forster, The Longest Yarn: Britain at War brings history to life through an extraordinary collection of knitted and crocheted scenes.
The exhibition explores everyday life and experiences during wartime Britain — from rationing and evacuation to the Blitz, grim newspaper headlines and Britain’s darkest hours, culminating in the euphoria of peace.
Each scene has been carefully created by volunteer knitters from across the UK, drawing on historical research and personal memories. The result is a remarkable and highly detailed collection of handcrafted stories that has captivated thousands of visitors during its tour around the country.
The exhibition follows the success of the group’s first project, The Longest Yarn, which told the story of D-Day.
Coming to Brecon
The exhibition will arrive in Brecon following successful displays at venues including Welshpool, Wrexham, the Royal Hospital Chelsea and Astley Hall in Chorley, Lancashire.
The Royal Welsh Museum is particularly pleased to be bringing the exhibition to the town, with its military history collections providing a fitting setting for this unique interpretation of the wartime experience.
Dorcas Cresswell, Vice Chair of the Friends of the Royal Welsh Museum, helped secure the exhibition’s visit to Brecon. She said:
“It is so exciting to have The Longest Yarn come to our museum – the perfect setting for a display relating to military history.
“We are also grateful to 160th Brigade for supporting us in hosting this wonderful exhibition and we are sure the people of Brecon and surrounding areas will be thrilled to visit it in such historical surroundings.”
Mark your calendars
The Longest Yarn: Britain at War is coming to The Royal Welsh Museum, Brecon, this December 2026. The official opening date will be announced soon, so watch this space for the full announcement and admission information.
Once open, visitors will be able to explore the exhibition during special opening hours:
Monday–Friday: 10am–5pm
Saturday: 10am–4pm
Sunday: 11am–3pm
