Lieutenant Gonville Bromhead VC Revolver
Collection Description

Lieutenant Gonville Bromhead VC Revolver is a Stanton .45 Revolver presented to Major Bromhead VC by friends at Thurlby in memory of Rorke’s Drift.

Collection Detail

The following is the address which accompanied the revolver:

We the undersigned living in Thurlby, justly proud of the part which you took in the heroic defence of Rorke’s Drift, beg your acceptance of the accompanying revolver as a token of our esteem and admiration of your gallant conduct which has brought honour to the name of England and especially to Thurlby, your native place. We would, at the same time, take this opportunity of offering to you our congratulations on you obtaining the rank of Captain and Brevet Major; and of you receiving the Victoria Cross.

We trust that you may be spared to a long life of usefulness in the service of our country and that we may see you amongst us again in Thurlby. We hope that you may never find yourself face-to-face with such members as you successfully met at Rorke’s Drift, but should this occur, we trust that our revolver may not fail you in the hour of need and we are certain that it could not be held by a worthier hand.
